CMPD to visit homes of repeat juvenile offenders to help prevent July 4th violence

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Last year on the Fourth of July, the scene at Romare Bearden Park was remembered for the wrong reasons.

People hid in parking garages during the July Sky Show across the street at Truist Field after police say teens set off illegal fireworks, started fights and ran through the crowd with masks on to create panic.

This year, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department has joined a collaborative effort with Center City Partners, the Charlotte Regional Visitors Authority, the District Attorney’s Office and others to curb crime in Uptown and improve visitors’ perception of the city.

“We’re going to go to their homes,” said CMPD Chief Johnny Jennings. “These are the kids who caused problems during last year’s event, and these are the kids who caused problems during New Year’s Eve . We are visiting their guardians, so they can clearly understand the consequences associated with their actions.”
