Just in Time for Thanksgiving, Gramma’s Candied Yams, with Her Secret Ingredient.

With Thanksgiving nearly upon us, here’s a favorite Thanksgiving dish that everyone enjoys! It includes gramma’s secret additive.

3 to 4 pounds of yams, peeled and cubed or sliced. I’ve used sweet potatoes before with delish results also.

3/4 cup of packed brown sugar.

4 tablespoons of melted butter.

1-1/2 teaspoons of cinnamon.

1/4 teaspoon of nutmeg.

2 tablespoons of orange juice. I use a fresh orange usually, because you need some zest also.

1-1/2 teaspoons of orange zest.

3 tablespoons of brandy. Gramma was a hoot with her brandy. Always said it was her “secret ingredient”. Sorry, she just wrote down brandy. Whatever was available was what she used.

1 cup of mini marshmellows, or marshmellow fluffy stuff. I added this. Didn’t see it on gramma’s original recipe, but I always use. I like the browned marshmallow topping.

1/2 cup of chopped pecans. I like to lightly roast them.

Takes time in a slow cooker but worth it. Besides it gives you time to work on your other food dishes. Gramma didn’t have this luxury. She had to cook it the hard way. Not me!
