112-acre section of ‘deteriorated’ buildings off Providence Road to see revitalization

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — More than 2,600 housing units and a slew of new business and recreational options are coming to an out-of-date corridor of Providence Road.

The Charlotte City Council approved three different rezonings Monday night that combined for 112 acres near the Providence Road intersections with Sardis Lane and the northern end of Olde Providence Road. The historic home of the Providence Square shopping center features aging commercial buildings mixed in with garden-style apartments that Councilmember Tariq Bokhari says are “deteriorated.”

He was pleasantly surprised with how little community pushback there was for a group of projects he is excited to see on the books.

“It’s a cause for concern in a lot of these cases,” he said of the wholesale changes. “That’s a testament to the three combined development teams. This is one of the better efforts that I’ve seen to stay up to date with all the neighborhoods. It’s a unique opportunity to revitalize an area that was developed over 60 years ago with mixed-use centers.”
