Charlotte mayor undecided on 2025 re-election bid

Charlotte Mayor Vi Lyles told Channel 9 she is undecided on whether she will run for re-election in 2025. Lyles has been mayor since 2017. Filing for Charlotte City Council and the mayoral election is in July.

“I have not made (a decision),” Lyles said. “Come down to the board of elections and we’ll see.”

How proposed affordable housing funds will be spent in Charlotte

Since taking office, Lyles oversaw a record amount of funding for affordable housing. She has also been instrumental in the passage of the Unified Development Ordinance, Bank of America Stadium improvements, the Red Line acquisition, and investments in Corridors of Opportunity.

Lyles says her priority in 2025 is landing a sales tax increase referendum on the ballot. If approved by voters, the funds will be used for the Red Line, light rail expansion, bus improvements, and other transportation initiatives.

The General Assembly will have to authorize the ballot measure.

“I’m an optimist about this,” Lyles said. “I think we are building a good case.”
