Fallout continues over CMPD chief’s reported settlement amid threat allegations

CHARLOTTE ( QUEEN CITY NEWS ) — Fallout is deepening around Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Chief Johnny Jennings after reports surfaced that the city paid him a six-figure settlement, months after a former city council member allegedly threatened to “ruin” his career.

The settlement, first reported by public radio station WFAE, stems from a dispute between Chief Jennings and former council member Tariq Bokhari over police policy.

Specifically, the two clashed over whether CMPD officers should be allowed to wear additional body armor — namely, outer protective vests. In a series of text messages, Bokhari allegedly told Jennings he would “cripple his legacy.”…
