Overnight severe threat, isolated storms Friday

May’s second Thursday is off to a sunny and toasty start, but scattered storms will win out by day’s end. A Level 2 out of 5 severe risk has been posted for the WCCB Charlotte viewing area this afternoon overnight into early Friday morning. Wind gusts approaching 60 mph and hail up to golf-ball-size will be the main threats early on before evolving into widespread wind threat overnight. There is also a low-end tornado risk late Thursday night into early Friday morning. Keep your phones charged tonight in case any alerts/warnings are issued.

Most of the moisture clears to our south and east by sunrise Friday morning, but isolated showers and storms may re-develop in the afternoon as a cold front slices through the Carolinas. A Level 1 out of 5 risk has been posted for our area on Friday; once again, hail and wind will be the main threats with any storms that fire up. Drier air filters in from the north by the start of our Mother’s Day weekend, but the clouds will stick around through Mom’s big day. Highs will hang around the 60s and 70s across the board on Saturday and Sunday. Outside of a stray shower, most of us stay dry through noon Sunday before more significant rain chances begin to creep in from the south by the evening.

We can actually partially thank today’s system for the resurgent rain chances by the end of Mother’s Day weekend. The southern side of the system will stall in the northern Gulf, collecting moisture and energy this weekend before slowly trudging back to the north. Heavy rain is possible on Monday and Tuesday across the board as the sluggish storm sits over the Southeast through the first half of next week. Most communities will see at least 1-2″ of rain between Sunday night and Tuesday night…
