One of community’s founding families owned home on N.C. 73

HUNTERSVILLE – Like an apparition emerging from the woods, a decaying early 20th century home appeared as land was cleared for a multifamily housing development on N.C. 73 next to the new Publix.

Over the last several decades, as the once stately home sat vacant, trees and brush reforested the old farmland and obscured the home from the road. Its sudden discovery was a sad sight for history lovers who bemoaned its imminent demolition.

But for Tom Mayes, fond memories of the home will live on. He remembers a time before N.C. 73 cut across the landscape, visiting his aunt, Kate Mayes, in the lovely home…
