First-ever gold discovered in US was found North Carolina, not California

CABARRUS COUNTY, N.C. (WBTV) – Most people are familiar with the California gold rush — but did you know the first gold ever discovered in this country was found right here in North Carolina?

The story starts in 1799 in Cabarrus County with 12-year-old Conrad Reed.
