From ding to done: Cellphones power down in N.C. classrooms with new ban

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The days of buzzing, dinging phones in school classes are numbered.

Starting this school year, a new statewide ban will require students across North Carolina to power down their phones during instructional time. The move marks one of the most sweeping efforts yet to cut distractions in classrooms.

At Charlotte Secondary School, the shift is already underway. Administrators have installed hanging pockets in classrooms. Each one has a numbered slot for students to store their phones until class is over. If phones aren’t in the holders, they’re expected to be turned off…
