Nearly 200 animals left in care after low turnout to Gaston “Clear the Shelter” event

Gaston County Animal Care and Enforcement’s 2025 ‘Clear the Shelter’ event saw one of the lowest turnouts in recent years, leaving the facility with more than 180 animals still in care.

In an effort to rehome more animals, the shelter plans to extend free adoptions into September, according to Office Manager Elizabeth Henderson.

At the event, 39 animals including 19 cats and 20 dogs were adopted…
