Inmate Found Unresponsive, Pronounced Dead at Mecklenburg County Detention Center

A 62-year-old man was pronounced dead at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center after being discovered unresponsive by a detention officer early Sunday morning. The incident occurred during routine checks while breakfast was being distributed, with the officer finding the man around 5:30 a.m. and promptly calling for medical assistance.

Despite immediate lifesaving efforts by the detention staff and despite the arrival of Charlotte Fire Department and Mecklenburg EMS, who assisted, the man was ultimately pronounced dead at approximately 6:13 a.m. This comes according to the reports by WBTV and WCNC. The deceased had been in custody since June 2025, but no next of kin has been identified for notification, as he was recorded as unhoused upon his arrest.

“I have the unfortunate duty of announcing the death of a resident within our facility.
