Charlotte Woman Charged with Insurance Fraud, NC Department of Insurance Reports

A Mecklenburg County woman has found herself entangled in the law’s grip on allegations of insurance fraud. As the North Carolina Department of Insurance reports, the fraud unit, led by Commissioner Mike Causey, swooped down upon Kimberly Gilliam, 47, of Charlotte, and charged her with a serious felony for allegedly attempting to game her rental insurance.

The case unfolds around Gilliam’s reputed act of submitting online-found images to Homesite Insurance Company of the Midwest. In her claim, she alleged flood damage to her personal items, a move that if proven could to seriously undermine the trust required between insurers and their clients. The incident itself dates back to October 28th, 2024, the warrant states – a fact echoed by documents and the North Carolina Department of Insurance.

Gilliam was arrested on August 27 and promptly released on a $50,000 unsecured bond. She took to the stand in Mecklenburg County District Court the following day.
