The killing of 23-year-old Iryna Zarutska on Charlotte’s light rail has left the city’s Ukrainian community in shock and mourning.

Zarutska, who came to the U.S. in search of safety, was stabbed to death in August while riding the Lynx Blue Line. For many refugees, the violence feels like the very danger they thought they had left behind.

Timothy Kozhayev, who has family in both Ukraine and Russia, said the tragedy struck a painful chord.
