Festival in the Park Celebrates 61 Years!

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — It’s one of Charlotte’s most beloved Fall traditions, Festival in the Park is back for its’ 61st year! Set against the stunning backdrop of Freedom Park, this free, family-friendly event brings together art, music, food, and fun for all ages. Joining us today on the show, were two familiar faces from the festival: artisan, Alfreda Johnson, and Frank Whitney, longtime festival supporter and arts advocate.

Since 1964, Festival in the Park has been a Charlotte staple, celebrating creativity and community in the heart of the Queen City. This year, more than 192 artists will showcase their work, alongside three live performance stages, a Family Fun Zone with rides and games, and a Children’s Art Area where young creators can get hands-on.

One of the festival’s most cherished artists is Alfreda Johnson, who’s been part of the event for over two decades. Her intricate Sweetgrass baskets are not only beautiful, they’re part of a centuries-old Gullah tradition. “Sweetgrass basket weaving is more than just a craft,” Alfreda shares. “It’s a story passed down through generations. Every coil, every stitch, carries history.”…
