As January comes into view, Charlotte and Mecklenburg County are gearing up for the annual salute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a slew of events meant to honor his legacy, including the traditional parade and a set of community awards. The City of Charlotte announced that parade registration is now underway for organizations wishing to participate in the January 17 march through uptown Charlotte. Well over 100 groups are expected to join, from marching bands to step teams, illustrating a rich tapestry of communal harmony.
Interested parties have until December 13 to register for the festivities, and are equally encouraged to volunteer for the day. It’s a hands-on opportunity to be part of a tradition that’s as much a celebration as it is a memorial, uniting the city in reflection and action reflective of King’s dreams and deeds.
While the parade is a visible centerpiece, there’s also a vital behind-the-scenes component that recognizes local changemakers. The Growing the Dream award, as “an unsung hero from Charlotte-Mecklenburg,” spotlights grassroots leadership in advancing unity and diversity.
