NC man found guilty of crashing into Mecklenburg County ambulance, injuring Medic employees

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A North Carolina man was found guilty of felony assault charges Tuesday two years after crashing into a parked ambulance in northeast Charlotte and seriously injuring several people.

A Mecklenburg County jury found Brian Ogbonna, of Colfax, guilty on four counts:

  • Failure to move over causing serious injury
  • Three counts of assault with a deadly weapon causing serious injury

He pleaded not guilty to the charges last week, but Tuesday was sentenced to 24-41 months in prison. He also is required to complete 150 hours of community service and enter into a mental health assessment upon release.

LATE-NIGHT MEDIC CRASH

Court documents show that on May 12, 2023, then-19-year-old Brian Ogbonna crashed his Nissan sedan into a Mecklenburg EMS (Medic) truck late at 12:30 a.m. as an emergency crew was treating a patient at North Tryon Street and West Mallard Creek Church Road.

Officials said one Medic employee suffered life-threatening injuries and another suffered serious injuries following the wreck. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said Ogbonna was speeding and ran a red light…
