Charlotte Convenience Store Raided for Illegal Gambling, Owner and Employee Charged

The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department took to social media to disclose a crackdown on illegal gambling activities at a local convenience store. The post, dating back to October 6, detailed the actions taken against the Kilborne Mart on Kilborne Drive, which found itself at the heart of ABC and gambling violations. According to the CMPD’s statement, initial inspections by Eastway Division officers in May 2025 unveiled four sweepstakes slot machines inside the establishment.

The owner, Mussie Teklemarian Estifanos, 47, was then advised to remove these machines. Despite the warning, a follow-up check in September after additional complaints led to a seizure of illegal gambling equipment and cash. Specifically, officers confiscated “four illegal gambling stations” and “$2,081 in U.S. currency.” While a string of ABC violations were submitted to the ABC Commission for the gambling, another violation report will be sent to the NC Lottery Commission in relation to the gambling activities coexisting with lottery permits, as per the CMPD’s release.
