CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and Mecklenburg County community services say most domestic violence incidents can be prevented before they turn into a serious incident, or worse, a homicide.
“We’re a unit that primarily is responsible for investigating intimate partner violence,” CMPD’s Domestic Violence Unit Sgt. Christopher Pinckney said. “So, when it’s felonies, assault with a deadly weapon, strangulation, stalkings, extortion, sextortion, blackmail, that’s when my unit gets involved,”
CMPD receives up to 40,000 calls each year related to domestic violence. Elyse Hamilton-Childres, the Director of Prevention and Intervention Services with the county, said that last year there were 11 domestic violence-related homicides.
