Charlotte’s Catherine M. Wilson Center to Shut Down, New CRCs Enhance Community Services

The Catherine M. Wilson Center, known for providing vital economical services to Charlotte’s community, will permanently close its doors to the public come this New Year’s Eve. According to an official statement, residents will need to redirect their footsteps to two alternate community resource centers (CRCs) as they look to access assistance with their Medicaid, Food and Nutrition Services, and other programs.

Starting in 2023, citizens of northeast Charlotte have been able to seek help at the Ella B. Scarborough CRC on Stitt Road. Meanwhile, those on the west side have the Valerie C. Woodard CRC on Freedom Drive readily available. The intent behind these centers is to quite efficiently co-locate an array of services, streamlining the process by which residents can receive the assistance they need without the scramble of traveling between offices or standing in multiple queues.

Per the detailed announcement on MeckNC.gov, the CRCs aren’t mere replacements but rather enhancements to the service infrastructure. They offer employment services, support for women, infants and children (WIC), child support assistance, public health services, help for veterans, behavioral health counseling, and even pre-K programs under MECK Pre-K, in addition to the economic services already mentioned…
