Roof Above, other Charlotte organizations, preparing unhoused community for extreme cold

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Roof Above, a homeless resource organization for men, will be adding at least 700 more shelter beds to its capacity in response to the freezing weather conditions expected Sunday and Monday.

It normally houses about 540 people. Officials say the goal is to get as many people inside as possible.

“We have an overflow status, so people can just show up at our overflow shelter on Statesville Avenue, and they can show up at North Tryon, and late afternoon, and we should have a mat for them,” said Randall Hitt, the Vice President of unsheltered services at Roof Above.

The city is partnering with The Salvation Army and Hearts for the Invisible to make sure shelters can hold more people through the weather event…
