Increased police presence at Charlotte Hanukkah festival amid deadly mass shooting in Australia: CMPD

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — On Sunday night, Symphony Park in SouthPark is hosting a Hanukkah Festival to celebrate the first night of Hanukkah. Hanukkah celebrates the victory of freedom over oppression, light over darkness, and is a time for unity and friendship.

Tragically, in Australia, 11 people were killed during a Hanukkah celebration on Sydney’s Bondi Beach. In response to this, CMPD says there will be extra law enforcement in the area.

Just before the lighting of the menorah, marking the beginning of the eight-day holiday, Rabbi Yossi Groner with Chabad of Charlotte spoke to the gathered crowd.

“Our message is that the lights of Hanukkah will never ever be extinguished,” he said. “The lights of Hanukkah will burn proudly in our hearts, in our minds and our menorahs.”…
