Inmate Dies Following Medical Emergency at Mecklenburg County Detention Center in Charlotte

A Mecklenburg County Detention Center inmate identified as 42-year-old Jason Hicks died following a medical emergency, as reported by the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. The incident occurred early in the morning after Christmas. Hicks, housed at the Detention Center-Central located on East Fourth Street in uptown Charlotte, was found in need of medical attention, prompting a detention officer to call for aid at approximately 4:37 a.m., according to The Herald.

Hicks was evaluated by jail medical staff and transported by MEDIC to Atrium Health Main, where he died around 8:27 a.m. He had been booked on December 19 on felony larceny, habitual larceny, and fugitive charges, with a $40,000 bond. The cause of death has not been released. The incident marks the fourth in-custody death in Mecklenburg County this year.

Sheriff Garry McFadden said the loss was “heartbreaking,” noting that the man’s next of kin has been notified and offering condolences to the family.
