North Carolina ranks 10th nationally for package theft as holiday deliveries surge

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) — North Carolina ranks 10th in the nation for package thefts, with an estimated 7,000 packages stolen daily, according to a new SafeWise report.

The problem is particularly severe in Charlotte, which ranks seventh nationwide for package theft. The city saw 1.2 million packages stolen in 2024 alone, with more than 3,400 packages disappearing daily and costing businesses and families $152 million.

Holiday season increases theft opportunities

“Porch piracy, if you will, or theft of packages increases as a function of volume, and particularly around the holidays when people are ordering online more frequently, just the sheer volume alone creates more opportunities for theft and loss to occur,” said Dr. Reginald Silver with UNC Charlotte’s supply chain logistics program.
