North Carolina lawmakers probe crime, spending, and DEI policies across Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The North Carolina House Oversight Committee has requested Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden to testify this month, citing concerns over public safety, department management, and compliance with state law.

Rep. Brenden Jones said, “Due to the gross mismanagement within the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Department, not to mention its blatant disregard for state law, the House Oversight Committee has invited Sheriff Garry McFadden to testify on his department’s failures.”

According to a Christmas Eve letter sent to Sheriff McFadden, the committee is requesting his appearance on January 22, 2026, at 9 a.m. in the Legislative Building Auditorium. The committee said McFadden should be prepared to discuss public safety across Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, including security on the Charlotte Area Transit System (CATS), as well as strategic plans, spending, and diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives.

The sheriff is also required to submit written testimony at least one week before the hearing, along with a current résumé. Failure to meet those requirements could result in his testimony being excluded from the official record, authorities noted…
