Judge keeps North Carolina teen jailed in ISIS-related case, calls evidence “chilling”

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Mint Hill teenager accused of planning a violent, ISIS-inspired attack will remain behind bars as his federal case moves forward, according to court documents.

Christian Sturdivant, 18, appeared in court on Wednesday for a detention hearing. The judge ruled Sturdivant will stay in custody until his next hearing, despite requests from his defense team to release him to his grandparents’ care.

Sturdivant also waived his right to a preliminary hearing.

Prosecution goes over its evidence

Federal prosecutors asked the court to hold Sturdivant without conditions, arguing detention is the only way to “reasonably assume the safety of the community.” The FBI told the court its investigation shows a “clear threat with intent to carry out” an attack…
