As we approach the observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, Mecklenburg County has announced a string of service closures for Monday, Jan. 19. The official release details the county’s intention to halt operations in various departments. Among those taking a day off will be the Department of Social Services, including Child, Family, and Adult Services, and the Department of Community Resources.
While taking a break in honor of the civil rights leader, facilities such as the Valerie C. Woodard Community Resource Center and Ella B. Scarborough Community Resource Center will also be inaccessible to the public. Affecting environmental stewardship, Mecklenburg County Solid Waste Centers are to be closed as well, bearing in mind that the city and county towns may still provide residential collection service – their websites will have the specifics.
The announcement indicates that public recreation won’t entirely come to a halt. Park and Recreation’s parks will remain open for those looking to reflect on King’s legacy in the great outdoors. However, indoor aquatic facilities, nature centers, recreation, and senior centers will not welcome visitors on the holiday.
