Mecklenburg County health director to resign

MECKLENBURG COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Dr. Raynard Washington will step down as Mecklenburg County Health Director on January 20, 2026.

Washington first joined the county in March 2020 as deputy health director and became director in 2021.

“Serving as Mecklenburg County Health Director has been an absolute honor,” Dr. Washington said in a released statement on Thursday. “I am so proud of our public health team and all that we have accomplished during some of the most challenging times for public health. While I’ll miss Mecklenburg County and my colleagues, I know the team here will continue the work to make health possible for everyone.”

During his time with the county, Washington helped lead the COVID-19 response, created North Carolina’s first Office of Violence Prevention, expanded access to health services, and helped the county achieve Accreditation with Honors from the NC Local Public Health Accreditation Board…
