Charlotte man sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison after pleading guilty to meth trafficking

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A convicted Charlotte drug trafficker was sentenced to nearly 22 years in prison Wednesday.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office of Western North Carolina announced the decision for 32-Deontaye Smith following a federal investigation that resulted in the seizure of large quantities of methamphetamine, fentanyl, two firearms, large sums of cash, and a stolen vehicle. In addition to the 262-month prison term, Smith was ordered to serve five years of supervised release. He pleaded guilty to three counts of distributing methamphetamine.

According to court documents and the sentencing hearing, in March 2024, investigators became aware that an individual known as “Taye,” later identified as Smith, was selling large quantities of methamphetamine, fentanyl, and firearms in the Charlotte area. Investigators arranged multiple drug buys between an informant and Smith, during which he purchased significant quantities of methamphetamine.

Four months later, Smith was indicted by a federal grand jury, and Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearm agents arrested Smith at his residence…
