High-Speed Chase Ends with K9’s Mile-and-a-Half Trackdown of Suspect in Stolen Vehicle in Charlotte Area

A man led Belmont police on a high-speed chase after driving a stolen vehicle recklessly through the streets, officials reported. On January 23, Belmont Police Department officers spotted a car being driven “in a careless and reckless manner” on the wrong side of the road in Belmont, about 12 miles west of Charlotte, as per QC News. When officers tried to pull over the car, the driver, later identified as Wofford L. Mathis, failed to comply, instigating the chase that eventually crossed over into Mecklenburg County.

The pursuit terminated on Sharyn Drive in west Charlotte, where Mathis abandoned the vehicle, escaping on foot. Despite their efforts, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department, who had joined the pursuit, could not catch Mathis immediately after the abandoned car. Officers deployed K9 Bandit who tracked the suspect down, with the K9 successfully tracing Mathis for approximately a mile and a half before his capture, as WYFF 4 reported.

Mathis is now facing a string of charges including felony flee to elude, possession of a stolen motor vehicle, reckless driving, driving with a revoked license, possession of fentanyl, driving while impaired (DWI), and other related charges. A bond was set for Mathis at $25,000, and he was subsequently incarcerated at the Gaston County Jail, according to WSOC-TV…
