NC House leader requests Sheriff McFadden’s communication with ICE, other documents following contentious questioning

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Two days after being grilled by state lawmakers on public safety, Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden has been asked to provide more documents, mostly related to his communication with immigration officials.

McFadden and other Charlotte leaders were in Raleigh to testify to the Republican-led House Oversight Committee on safety six months after the light rail stabbing death of Iryna Zarutska. Lawmakers questioned McFadden aggressively compared to other officials, like Mayor Vi Lyles, especially over the Democratic sheriff’s stance on the tough-on-crime Iryna’s Law passed last fall.
