Born in Mangum on Feb. 6, 1888, Charles Walter Tillett Jr., was both a son, and a grandson, of Richmond County.

After growing up in Charlotte, young Tillett took his undergraduate degree at Carolina in 1909 before studying law there, and passing the bar in 1911. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa.

While his father was president of the North Carolina Bar Association during the time that Charles was completing his legal studies, the younger Tillett would follow him to the post for the 1934-35 term…
