Mecklenburg County commissioner was at taxpayer-funded trip instead of court hearing for DWI charge

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – A WBTV Investigation revealed this week that Mecklenburg County Commissioner Yvette Townsend-Ingram was staying in a Winston-Salem hotel room funded by taxpayers in 2025 when records show she missed a court hearing for a 2024 DWI case.

Emails obtained by WBTV though a record request show that Ingram and other county commissioners were attending their annual budget retreat on Jan. 30, 2025. That same day, Ingram had a scheduled court date related to her community service requirements after pleading guilty to a DWI charge out of Gaston County.

The records show the room at The Cardinal Hotel cost more than $500 over two nights…
