Momentum builds to reopen Mecklenburg County’s juvenile detention center, but funding and staffing hurdles remain

CHARLOTTE, N.C. — More than three years after Mecklenburg County closed its juvenile detention center, momentum is growing among local and state leaders to reopen the facility known as Jail North.

The center has been shuttered since November 2022. Now, city, county, and state officials, along with advocacy groups, say they want it back in operation. The question is how to make that happen.
