First day of early voting draws motivated voters in Mecklenburg County

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Early voters wasted no time casting their ballots as North Carolina kicked off the first day of early voting Thursday ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

“Voting is crucial, especially in these days and times when our democracy is under a great threat,” early voter Suzanne Elsberry Schweikert said.

Among the first to show up were voters eager to sport their “I Voted Early” stickers, including Don Gordon.

“The only people who have power are the people who vote, so I wanted to exercise my right as a U.S. citizen to vote and to contribute to what’s going on in the country,” Gordon said. “There was no line whatsoever. I had done my research ahead of time, had my list and went through and checked the ones I wanted to vote for. I was in and out in probably five minutes.”…
