Charlotte company at center of multi-million dollar pop-up fraud: DOJ

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — A Charlotte man is heading to federal prison for his role in a multi-million dollar tech support scam that targeted thousands across the country.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Western District of North Carolina, Nachiket Banwari, 36, of Charlotte, was sentenced to 30 months followed by three years of supervised release. Banwarie was also ordered, along with two others, to forfeit over $3.7 million in criminal proceeds.

Prosecutors said Banwari worked for Capstone Technologies, a Charlotte-based company that used fake internet pop-ups to trick people into believing their computers were infected with viruses. The pop-ups froze victims’ screens and instructed them to call a number for “technical support,” federal officials said.

When the victims called, they were routed to overseas call centers where workers falsely claimed to represent Microsoft. Authorities said victims were then pressured to pay hundreds, or even thousands of dollars, to fix problems that didn’t exist…
