Charlotte’s Original Chicken and Ribs: A Green Book legacy still serving the community

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – As the country counts down to America’s 250th birthday, one Charlotte restaurant stands as a living piece of that history.

This year marks the 90th anniversary of the Green Book, a guide first published in 1936 by New York postal worker Victor Green and his co-workers. The book helped Black Americans find businesses where they could travel and be free from harassment during segregation. One of those businesses The Original Chicken and Ribs on Beatties Ford Road is still open today.

Three generations, one family

Jermaine Blackmon is the third generation of his family to own the restaurant. He said the business holds a distinction few others can claim.

“We are the only company that is still in existence that has the same name, same location and same owners from the Green Book in the Jim Crow era,” Blackmon said. “It’s been a blessing.”…
