CHARLOTTE — As WBTV celebrates Black History Month, the award-winning West Charlotte High School Marching Band performed “Lift Every Voice and Sing,” a song widely considered the Black National Anthem.
The band, known as the Marching Lions, is under the leadership of Malik Davis.
About the song
“Lift Every Voice and Sing” was written by NAACP leader James Weldon Johnson in 1900. In 1919, the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People designated it the Negro National Anthem.
The song has been performed and sung as a reminder to continue the fight for freedom and to promote unity.
