Gaston County drivers who regularly take Wilkinson Boulevard into Charlotte could run into some road work in the next year as the North Carolina Department of Transportation works to widen a “dangerously narrow” bridge across the Catawba River.
According to North Carolina House Representative Kelly Hastings, the General Assembly’s transportation department has been working on a plan to improve the bridge, which sits right on the county line between Mecklenburg and Gaston counties.
This year, special permits were approved, and the $56.6 million project is expected to start moving forward in May.
