Charlotte Water responds to wastewater spill at Lake Norman

CORNELIUS, N.C. — A wastewater overflow near Harbor Light Boulevard in Cornelius has allowed an estimated 100 gallons to reach Lake Norman.

Charlotte Water says a contractor accidentally damaged a low pressure pipe which caused the overflow. Most homes along the lakes are served by low pressure sewer systems that move waste to Charlotte Water’s wastewater treatment plants.

Though this overflow was caused by a contractor, Cam Coley, a spokesperson at Charlotte Water, says a majority of wastewater overflows can be prevented. According to Coley, “Anything put in plumbing or a manhole can cause wastewater overflows,” which could then lead to raw sewage ending up inside your own home. He says even products labeled as “flushable” don’t breakdown in the sewer system and could contribute to clogging…
