SCDES and Silfab Solar Sign Compliance Agreement Following Fort Mill Spills

The South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES) has released updates regarding its ongoing investigation into a series of chemical spills at the Silfab Solar facility in Fort Mill. While the investigation continues in close coordination with local and state officials, the agency reassured the public in a March 16, 2026 statement, noting, “There remains no impact to people, nearby communities or the environment.”

To address the incidents, Silfab Solar has entered into a formal Compliance Agreement with the SCDES. As part of this binding pact, the manufacturer must continue to halt the start-up of manufacturing operations that involve the handling or use of regulated substances and hydrofluoric acid. Furthermore, the facility is barred from bringing additional regulated chemicals on-site until a rigorous set of safety, reporting, and emergency response requirements are met.

“SCDES will continue strict oversight of the facility to ensure it complies with all of its issued permits as well as all applicable federal and state laws and regulations that exist for protecting people’s health and the environment,” the agency stated…
