Uptown Braces For 17-Day Takeover As Charlotte Shout! Shuts Down Streets

Uptown is getting ready to get loud. Charlotte SHOUT!, the city’s 17-day mashup of art, music, food and ideas, is set to pull in an estimated 10,000 visitors between April 3 and April 19. Crews are already at work around First Ward Park, and organizers are warning that the fun comes with a side of detours, heavier foot traffic and tighter curbside access for most of the month.

Road closures kicked in Monday near First Ward Park, with a key block taken completely out of play, according to WSOC-TV. Eighth Street is shut down between North Brevard Street and the LYNX Blue Line tracks, and that stretch is not expected to reopen until April 20, the day after SHOUT! wraps. WSOC-TV also reports that city officials are preparing for roughly 10,000 visitors and extra safety measures on the festival’s busiest days.

The festival’s official site lists April 3 through 19, 2026 as the dates for SHOUT! and promotes more than 200 events scattered across Uptown, from large public art pieces to live performances and food-focused programming, according to Charlotte SHOUT!. Organizers are offering a downloadable guide and an interactive map to help people plot their routes and pick their must-see stops. Many of the installations are clustered in and around First Ward Park, with additional activity spilling into nearby blocks.

Closures Around First Ward Park

The stretch of Eighth Street between North Brevard Street and the LYNX Blue Line tracks will stay closed for festival staging and operations through April 20, per WSOC-TV. Drivers should be ready for detours onto neighboring streets and tighter through-traffic near the park while crews finish setup and crowds move in on show days. Festivalgoers are urged to follow posted signs and pad their travel time so they are not caught off guard by a barricade.

Getting There And Getting Around

Organizers recommend leaning on the official map and opting for transit or ride-hailing when heading into Uptown to dodge parking headaches, according to Charlotte SHOUT!. First Ward Park, listed at 301 E. 7th Street, serves as a central hub for many of the headline installations, per Charlotte On The Cheap. For up-to-date details on traffic, closures and detours, visitors should check local traffic reports and official festival updates before making the trip into Uptown…
