Charlotte barbecue restaurant feels pinch as beef prices hit record high

CHARLOTTE (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — The price of beef hit an all-time high this year after climbing consistently for years, and barbecue restaurant owners are feeling it along with their customers.

A sign at Sweet Lew’s BBQ in Charlotte reads, “Beef is expensive, y’all. We hate to do it…but until beef prices go down, please note that there will be a $3 additional charge on all brisket orders.”

“Because [the price is] going up, we have to go up in order to make [back] what we put in,” said Angela Johnson, a Sweet Lew’s employee.

The price of beef was $6.73 per pound in February, according to the latest data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics…
