York County rally fuels debate over Silfab Solar safety amid chemical spill concerns

YORK COUNTY, S.C. — A community rally over the Silfab Solar facility in York County has ended, but the debate over the solar manufacturer’s future — and its impact on surrounding neighborhoods — shows no signs of cooling down.

Manufacturing operations at the facility remain paused following two chemical incidents in early March that rattled the Fort Mill community and temporarily closed a nearby elementary school. While regulators have allowed assembly work to continue, residents say they want more than a temporary fix.

“My biggest thing is you had this spill that is eventually going to impact the water,” said one neighbor who lives near the facility. “Some of these houses are still on wells around here and should be really concerned.”…
