Proposed NC property tax cap sparks pushback from Mecklenburg County leaders

RALEIGH, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Lawmakers returning to Raleigh on Tuesday are expected to consider a measure that would limit how much North Carolinians pay in property taxes. But a proposal put forward by lawmakers is already getting pushback from Mecklenburg County officials who say it could threaten funding for schools and essential services.

Leading Republicans at the General Assembly want to cap property taxes by amending the state’s constitution to limit how much local governments could raise those taxes.

“We have to have protections for homeowners, renters, and business owners. All of those people who are seeing the taxes impact their quality of life, their ability to stay in their home, their ability to continue renting in a certain area, or even expand their business,” said Cabarrus County Republican State Rep Brian Echevarria in a social media post…
