Charlotte Solid Waste Services urges proper recycling practices for Earth Day

When it comes to Earth Day, Charlotte Solid Waste Services says their message is simple: get recycling right.

Do’s:

  • Recyclable in curbside collection only have 6 core items: paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastic bottles, jugs and glass bottles/jars
  • Empty and rinse containers
  • Break down cardboard so it fits in the cart

Don’ts:

  • Do not bag recyclables
  • Do not include plastic bags, film or wrap
  • Do not place food waste or liquid-filled containers in the cart
  • Avoid “wishcycling” (putting items in the cart hoping they are recyclable). When in doubt, leave it out.

“It’s easy just to toss it in the trash but it’s easy when you can just sort it before you place it on the curb,” Erika Wiley with Solid Waste Services said.

One of the biggest mistakes they see is bagged recyclables. Plastic bags, film, and food waste can contaminate the entire load.

“It helps reduce what’s sent to our landfills, conserves natural resources and supports more sustainable communities,” Wiley said. “It also helps keeps our neighborhoods clean and reduce litter.”…
