As Charlotte considers putting a pause of data centers, there are already a dozen in the city

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Several of Charlotte’s city council members are signaling they want to put a moratorium on all new data centers in the Queen City.

The council voted Monday night to schedule a public hearing and set a final vote on a moratorium for the quickly expanding facilities next month.

Charlotte’s deputy city manager provided the City Council with data on why data centers have become so prevalent. Alyson Craig said the growth of artificial intelligence is increasing demand for high-density facilities that house graphics processing units (GPU). A GPU presents a much higher processing need than a central processing unit (CPU).

Since the distance from users affects speed, data center companies want to put them near popular centers to have fast processing, Craig said.

But Council wants Charlotte to stop being a haven for them…
