What started as a routine traffic stop in southwest Charlotte ended with a wanted man in cuffs and tens of thousands of dollars in alleged drug money off the street, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department. Officers with CMPD’s Southwest Service Area Crime Reduction Unit say they arrested Derrick Pope after pulling him over, then later searching his home, seizing firearms, narcotics and more than $40,000 in cash in the process. The initial stop turned up a gun, drugs and about $13,000, police said, and a follow-up warrant at Pope’s residence produced another firearm, additional narcotics and the rest of the cash. Pope was booked on a slate of weapons and drug counts, including trafficking and multiple possession-with-intent charges, according to the department.
What police say they recovered
In a Facebook post, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department lists the haul as roughly 746.8 grams of suspected marijuana, more than 60 grams of suspected cocaine, over 25 grams of suspected MDMA and 10 suspected oxycodone pills, along with two firearms and $40,332 in U.S. currency, according to the department. The post says officers first encountered Pope while he was in a vehicle and seized a firearm, narcotics and about $13,000 during that stop. Investigators then obtained and executed a search warrant at his home, which they say turned up additional narcotics, cash and another firearm. CMPD cites report number 20260515-1826-02 and credits the Southwest Service Area Crime Reduction Unit with the investigation.
Booking and charges
Local booking logs and a WCCB mugshot roundup list Pope on charges that include possession of a stolen firearm and possession with intent to sell or deliver cocaine, according to WCCB Charlotte. The department’s Facebook post fills in the rest of the picture with multiple counts, including possession with intent to sell or deliver marijuana (two counts), possession with intent to manufacture, sell or deliver MDMA (two counts), trafficking cocaine, carrying a concealed weapon and an allegation of “possession of a weapon of mass destruction,” per the department. Police say Pope was arrested on an outstanding warrant and remains in custody while the various counts move through the system.
Why the bust matters
The arrest is one of several recent Crime Reduction Unit operations that CMPD has highlighted as part of a broader push to clamp down on street-level drug dealing and illegal guns in neighborhoods. In an update on citywide trends, WFAE reported that CMPD told the public its first-quarter briefing showed a 23% drop in overall crime and emphasized proactive enforcement, including targeted CRU actions. Police framed this latest seizure as one more example of that approach, aimed at open-air drug markets and the weapons that often come with them.
Legal implications
The charges listed by police, including trafficking and several counts of possession with intent to sell or deliver controlled substances alongside multiple weapons-related counts, are felonies under North Carolina law. Penalties depend heavily on the type and quantity of the drugs involved. The main statutes for controlled-substance crimes and trafficking are set out in N.C.G.S. ยง 90-95, while firearms and related offenses appear in Chapter 14 of the General Statutes. The department’s public post did not include details on court filings, bond or initial appearance dates, which will show up in county records as the case advances…
