Charlottesville celebrates a half-century of the Downtown Mall

On Friday, Charlottesville’s Downtown Mall celebrates its 50th anniversary. To mark the milestone, the Albemarle Charlottesville Historical Society is spotlighting how civic leadership and social activism shaped the city with a special exhibit.

Then and Now: Charlottesville in the 1970s is on display at Vault Virginia’s gallery on the mall.

City leaders and Friends of Cville Downtown organized a full schedule of events on the mall in celebration, including tours led by the historical society. A birthday party for the mall is also planned, then there are concerts, a lantern parade, and light show and it’s all expected to end with a disco dance party.

“We wanted a way for the community to be a part of something really unique and special for the 50th anniversary of the mall and for the holiday weekend,” said Greer Achenbach, Friends of Cville Downtown’s executive director…
