Localities to weigh zoning changes as recreational cannabis sales set to begin July 2027

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WVIR) – Virginians 21 and older will be able to legally purchase recreational cannabis and possess up to two ounces beginning July 1, 2027, but local governments are still working through the zoning decisions that will determine where stores can operate.

Under the final recreational marijuana law passed by the General Assembly, cities and counties are responsible for deciding where cannabis stores can open. Neither Charlottesville nor Albemarle County has established a clear timeline for when those discussions will begin.
