CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA (CVILLE RIGHT NOW) – More than two weeks after VDOT began an emergency closure of the Proffit Rd. bridge over the Norfolk Southern Railroad tracks, there is still no work timeline for the repairs, VDOT Resident Engineer Craig Cooley told the Albemarle County Board of Supervisors Wednesday.
“Complicating factors,” Cooley credited for the lack of a timeline. “This bridge is 100% within railroad right-of-way and as a Department of Transportation it makes working there a challenge.”
“Just for us to be able to go into the railroad right-of-way to assess the structure we had to create and get a permit approved by the railroad, it takes time,” Cooley told supervisors. “Luckily we were able to push the permit process up to the state’s top priority, which basically means we pushed a bunch of other ones down below us, and we were able to access that bridge on Monday of this week.”…
